Do you settle for a bite or do you want leftovers?John 6:5-13

Let me set the scene for you.  The people had seen Jesus. They had seen the miracles that he had performed on the diseased. They had to see more!!! They followed Him. A great multitude of people had gathered to see what Jesus would do next.

“When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”
John 6:5

This was a major problem. People had traveled a long way just to see Jesus. They were tired and hungry. Jesus saw the crowd and He asked His disciple Philip; ”How will we feed all these people?” In verse 6 we see that Jesus knew exactly what was about to happen, but He wanted to see how one of His followers Philip would answer.

“And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. “  John 6:6
Now Philip had been a follower of Jesus for a while and he had seen the many miracles Jesus had performed. Day in and day out, he walked and talked with Jesus. He should have known that Jesus was in control. But what did he say?

“Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. “      John 6:7

A pennyworth is equal to a day’s worth of wages. So Philip was basically saying, if they had 200 days worth of wages, they still couldn’t feed all of these people. He didn’t have a clue what to do. Philip is a lot like us. He was thinking of what he couldn’t do, but he should have been thinking of what Jesus could do!!!!

“One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, “
John 6:8

“There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”
John 6:9

Here comes Andrew with a little boy and his small lunch. The 5 loaves probably looked a lot like small pancakes today and the fish were small also. This would be a meal for this child. There is great lesson to be learned here. The boy gave what little he had and trusted Jesus to do the rest. See, Philip didn’t even think to put it in Jesus’ hands.

“And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. “
John 6:10

“And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. “
John 6:11

“When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.”
John 6:12

Jesus took the food and blessed it .He not only fed the people but they had leftovers. Jesus had taken a couple of fish and a few pieces of bread and fed over 5,000 people. Philip had said they couldn’t even give each one a bite, but Jesus fed them to they were filled and had leftovers.

“Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.”
John 6:13

I encourage you to put your complete trust in Jesus. Philip had seen the miracles but still had trouble doing this.  Philip didn’t even try to give what he had to Jesus. The word ” little” is very significant in verse 7. Jesus doesn’t want to bless you a little. He wants to fill you up with blessings. Philip thought they couldn’t feed, even if  they had had nearly a years wages, so he didn’t even bother. But the little lad gave Jesus all he had and trusted Him.

Alone, we are weak. We couldn’t have fed the 5,000 either, but Jesus can. We sometimes rob ourselves. We pray to small and for too little. We are worried about a bite, when Jesus has a meal prepared. Don’t limit God by your lack of faith as Philip did. Will you turn over your fish and loaves today and see what God can do with it?
