"By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth."
I John 3:16-18
Love is mentioned throughout the Bible. In Leviticus (Lev. 19:18)It says: "...Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself..." In the book of John (John 5:12), Jesus says: “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you." The Bible tells us to love our neighbor, love one another, and in Matthew chapter 5 it tells us to even love our enemies. So obviously love for other people is a real big deal to God. So many times we do things that don't show love for others in us.
"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another." I John 4: 7-11
In these verses John shows that love is grounded in God's nature. Those who have been " Born of God", ought to imitate His character. While no one alive today has seen God in a physical sense, His love should be evident in the love that believers have for one another!!! People should see God's love through Christians. A lost person should see something different in someone who claims to be of God. They should be able to see God's love through You and Me!!! There may be someone at work or at school whom no one ever talks to. No one is friends to this person and no one ever has said anything really nice to them. Just by showing them the love of Christ, it could change their life forever. All it might take is for you to say hello with a smile or just a word of encouragement.
Let's go back to I John 3:17-
"But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?"
If someone is in need and you have the means to help, Guess What?, you should!!! Buying someone lunch, who hasn't eaten in two days, could mean the world to them. If they see that someone cares about them and their wellness, it will make them think, and want to know why someone would do such a thing. That $5.00 you spent on lunch could be what it takes to lead them to Jesus. You may have planted a seed that will be harvested one day, and all it cost was a few dollars!!!
In closing I would like for you to read John 13:34-35:
" A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."
Jesus said love is how ALL will know , we are HIS disciples!!! John 13:34-35:
